Known in Galician as Lavanco, the mallard is the most common wild duck species in Galicia. The breeding male is unmistakable, with a green head, black rear end and a yellowish orange bill tipped with black. The female Mallard is light brown, like most female dabbling ducks.
The Mallard inhabits most wetlands and usually feeds by dabbling for plant food or grazing.
One of the best places to watch mallards in Galicia is Doniņos coastal lagoon nature reserve in Co. Ferrol.
